A Virtual Reality Formula 1 style pit stop experience. The player joins the motion captured pit crew to perform a rapid tyre change in this fast paced and highly interactive exhibit. Developed as a solo project using Unreal Engine 5 and Optitrack motion capture technology. Targets SteamVR devices.
This gameplay video showcases a successful Pit Stop in the experience. Running on a HTC Vive Pro 2.
This was my first ever virtual reality project, which was an exciting prospect, but presented many unique challenges. UE5 offers a starting point for VR projects, though it is very basic and lacked any physical interaction for held objects. This was strongly desired for the pitstop experience. As a result, much of the early development focused on creating satisfying interaction between the player, the wheel gun, and the tyres.
Another new technology learnt for this project; motion capture! I had access to a new Optitrack motion capture setup for this project and, knowing nothing about the topic, had to quickly research the principles of mocap, and how to operate the software. The animations for the pit crew members were recorded using myself and real-world props. As well as learning a lot, this was also a highly enjoyable experience.
For this project I knew that it would be important to focus time and effort into specific aspects. Early on in development I outlined 3 hero assets, the car, the wheel gun, and the tyre. It was essential for the overall quality of the project that these core objects looked, functioned, and sounded as realistic and detailed as possible.
